چکیده

Aims. We study the clustering properties of Distant Red Galaxies (DRG) to test whether they are the progenitors of local massive galaxies. Methods. We use the GOODS-MUSIC sample, a catalog of ∼3000 Ks-selected galaxies based on VLT and HST observation of the GOODS-South field with extended multi-wavelength coverage (from 0.3 to 8μm) and accurate estimates of the photometric redshifts to select 179 DRGs with J −Ks ≥ 1.3 in an area of 135 sq. arcmin. Results. We first show that the J−Ks ≥ 1.3 criterion selects a rather heterogeneous sample of galaxies, going from the targeted high-redshift luminous evolved systems, to a significant fraction of lower redshift (1 < z < 2) and less luminous dusty starbursts. These low-redshift DRGs are significantly less clustered than higher-z DRGs. With the aid of extreme and simplified theoretical models of clustering evolution we show that it is unlikely that the two samples are drawn from the same population observed at two different stages of evolution. Conclusions. High-z DRGs likely represent the progenitors of the more massive and more luminous galaxies in the local Universe and might mark the regions that will later evolve into structures of intermediate mass, like groups or small galaxy clusters. Low-z DRGs, on the other hand, will likely evolve into slightly less massive field galaxies.

A comparison among LBGs, DRGs and BzK galaxies: their contribution to the stellar mass density in the GOODS-MUSIC sample

Context. The classification scheme for high redshift galaxies is complex at the present time, with simple colour selection criteria (i.e. EROs, IEROs, LBGs, DRGs, BzKs), resulting in ill-defined properties regarding stellar mass and star formation rate for these distant galaxies. Aims. The goal of this work is to investigate the properties of different classes of high-z galaxies, focusing in pa...

Astronomy & Astrophysics GMASS ultradeep spectroscopy of galaxies at z ∼ 2 , , VII . Sample selection and spectroscopy

Context. Ultra-deep imaging of small parts of the sky has revealed many populations of distant galaxies, providing insight into the early stages of galaxy evolution. Spectroscopic follow-up has mostly targeted galaxies with strong emission lines at z > 2 or concentrated on galaxies at z < 1. Aims. The populations of both quiescent and actively star-forming galaxies at 1 < z < 2 are still under-...

Evolution of red-sequence cluster galaxies from redshift 0.8 to 0.4: ages, metallicities, and morphologies

We present a comprehensive analysis of the stellar population properties and morphologies of red-sequence galaxies in 24 clusters and groups from z ∼ 0.75 to z ∼ 0.45. The dataset, consisting of 215 spectra drawn from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey, constitutes the largest spectroscopic sample at these redshifts for which such an analysis has been conducted. Analysis reveals that the evolution ...

The Space Density and Colors of Massive Galaxies at 2 < Z < 3: the Predominance of Distant Red Galaxies

Using the deep multi-wavelength MUSYC, GOODS, and FIRES surveys we construct a stellar mass-limited sample of galaxies at 2 < z < 3. The sample comprises 294 galaxies with M > 1011 M⊙ distributed over four independent fields with a total area of almost 400 arcmin2. The mean number density of massive galaxies in this redshift range ρ(M > 1011 M⊙) = (2.2±0.6)×10−4 h70 Mpc −3. We present median va...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
